1930's-40's RICHARD HUDNUT "Gemey The Jewel Fragrance"
easel-back store display
!!
Please see all
eight
photos, as they are an important part of my description. A really nice "find" from a local estate that featured many fine vintage advertising pieces, this thick, sturdy and elegant cardboard easel-back sign measures approximately
36" x 25"
.  This
exceedingly rare
and impressively colorful vintage store display features glittery-gold colors along with blue, green and pink colored "gems" that are portrayed in a kind of tumbling fashion. The sign's pull-out easel-back does not appear to have ever been used for display purposes! Based on the estate's other memorabilia, I believe the sign originates to the 1930's-1940's era but cannot narrow it down anymore than that. My final photo is a brief biography & photo of Mr. Hudnut taken off the web. An outstanding example of vintage perfume advertising from a bygone era!!

History
:
Richard Hudnut
(1855-1928) was an American businessman recognized as the first American to achieve international success in cosmetics manufacturing. His company once maintained separate U.S. and European headquarters on Fifth Avenue in
New York City
and in
Paris, France
respectively. Although his fortune had been built around cosmetics and beauty products, he preferred to be known as a "perfumer". Hudnut graduated from Princeton University, and then toured France and returned with the idea of introducing French-style perfumes and cosmetics to American women. Hudnut began transforming the family drugstore into an elegant showroom. The makeover was such that the shop now became a tourist attraction, and Hudnut's business flourished. Product lines included
Du Barry, Three Flowers,
Gemey
(the theme of the offered store display!),
Marvelous
and a highly successful line of hair care products. Hudnut's beauty products were eventually sold in department stores, an indication of their appeal to a more affluent and sophisticated clientele. A few of his more famous fragrances included
Queen Anne Cologne, Violet Sec, Aimee, DuBarry, Vanity
and
Three Flowers
.

Condition
: in very *Fine Shape* overall, save for varying degrees of bumps/wear on all four corners. There are two smallish areas of paper loss on the sign's back, in two of the uppermost corners. Most of the sign's surface on the front is in superb shape (as is the back!)...this piece simply
displays super!!!
