Due to popular demand, we're introducing our Whoosh! Wheels for round basetubes. We've shipped hundreds of pairs of our world-famous Whoosh! Wheels for Moyes & Airborne aluminum speedbar basetubes and Wills Wing aluminum speedbar basetubes around the globe. Now, you can own a quality product specifically designed for round basetubes, with components that are interchangeable with all our other great Whoosh! Wheel products.
Start with these, Whoosh! Wheels for your round basetube, updated version 2.0. Perfect on recreational hang gliders with either round straight basetubes or round speedbar basetubes ('comfort bars') . These wheels have white nylon hubs that are rugged and durable. The hubs slide snugly onto the ends of the basetube, and then (optionally) you can lock them in place with the integral setscrews within the hubs. Even the setscrews were carefully chosen to fit the needs of hang glider pilots. These wheels & hubs are designed to be compatible with almost all gliders with round basetubes, even those that have VG systems. The VG cord tunnel gives ample room for all VG cords without weakening the structure of the wheel hub itself.
When it's time to move up to a Sport 2, U2, Talon, T2C, Climax, Litesport, Litespeed (or any other glider with an aluminum airfoil basetube), you can keep the sturdy gray plastic wheel components and just upgrade with a pair of Whoosh! Wheel Hubs for Airfoil Basetubes. And, if you're the typical pilot who has both a 'performance' hang glider and a 'leisure' hang glider, you can keep your costs down by owning one pair of wheels that will fit both types of gliders. All you need is one pair of wheels and two pair of hubs. And, as always, replacement parts are available at pro-rated prices, so you don't have to buy a whole new pair if you break or lose one wheel.
Since this part isn't injection-molded, each hub is machined out of a solid block of white nylon, and each wheel is machined out of a solid block of deep gray PVC plastic. We did everything that we could to simplify the machining of this part, so as to keep the production costs down. Is this a complete set?
Yes. This set includes two WHOOSH! Wheel hubs and two wheels.
What is the diameter of the wheels?
A bit over six inches (6") in diameter.
Will these wheels and hubs fit on any glider with a round basetube?
99% of all the hang gliders in the world have been manufactured with 1-1/8" round basetubes (which is equivalent to 28mm in
Europe
). This product is designed for these common 1-1/8" basetubes. Please see our online store for Whoosh!Wheels that fit on 1.250" oversized round basetubes. In the unlikely event that your hang glider has a 1" basetube diameter (as in some gliders from the 1970s), contact us about custom sizing before you order.
Whoosh! Wheels for round basetubes must be fixed in place on the basetube to be used with a glider with a VG system. All it takes is a small allen wrench (aka 'hex key') to fix the setscrews on each wheel. You may have to move your VG cleat a bit, you may not.

Installation tips:
Day-to-day installation is easy, and requires only a small allen wrench ('hex key'). It takes only seconds to install each wheel. The white nylon hubs are slid on to the ends of the basetube and either held in place with fat rubberbands or with the one setscrew within each wheel. If your glider has a VG cord, you have to align the VG cord tunnel in the hub with the VG cord cleat and then fix the wheel hub to the basetube with the setscrew. Once the hubs are on, you can put the wheels on right away (preferred method), or after the glider has been completely assembled (may cause premature wear to the hubs). Just unbolt the two halves of each wheel, and re-bolt the wheel halves back together around the hub! If you choose not to use the setscrews, we recommend using fat rubberbands on the basetube to limit side-to-side travel of the Whoosh!Wheels. The hubs can be left on the basetube at all times, and do NOT need to be removed to fit in the bag with the disassembled glider.
The VG cleat on the right side of your basetube may be too close to the downtube to allow our Whoosh!Wheel to fit properly between the cleat and the downtube. In that case, you'll have to move the cleat inboard a bit, which is no problem.
Please note that Whoosh!Wheels are not designed to withstand hard vertical landings or hard landings with sideways motion. If you land going sideways, the entire Whoosh!Wheel assembly can and may slide on the basetube, or break.
In the unlikely event that you should damage your Whoosh!Wheels, we'll be happy to provide pro-rated individual replacement parts to our customers. In other words, you don't have to buy a complete replacement set if you've only damaged a portion of your Whoosh!Wheel set.
