Description
Gladys O'Donnell [1904 1973] was a prominent aviation pioneer and founding member of the Ninety Nines organization of women's pilots. In 1929, she soloed and became the first licensed woman pilot in Long Beach, California and then entered the 1929, Air Derby with very little flying experience and placed 2nd behind Louise Thaden. O'Donnell became a well known and respected racing pilot and competed in and won many promient air races of the 1930's. She also served on the board of the Ninety Nines and was active in the aviation field until her death in 1973. Listed for auction is the autograph of Gladys O'Donnell signed on a commemorative cover. The cover commemorates the Aug 20, 1929, Women's National Air Derby and the autograph is signed ''Gladys O'Donnell'' in black fountain pen. The cover is dual postmarked Aug 20, 1929, and is affixed with six U.S postage stamps. The covermeasures 6.50 x 3.50 inches, it has trivial wear and toning/soiling otherwise it is in very good condition. The autograph is authentic and the cover will be a desirable addition to any aviation collection. We have listed a nice collection of aviation, military and astronaut autographs.
