    Description

Listed for auction are the autographs of noted explorers and pioneering aviators Floyd Bennett and Bernt Balchen. Floyd Bennett [1890 1928] was an officer of the United States Navy, Polar explorer, pioneering aviator and a recipient of the Medal of Honor.  Bennett began his military career in 1917 as a machinist and attended flight school and earned his wings. In 1925 he served as Richard E. Byrd's pilot on a aviation survey of Greenland and then served as Byrd's pilot during his 1926 attempt to reach the North Pole for which Bennett was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1928 the crew of the Bremen were stranded in Greenly Island, Canada following a non-stop flight attempt from Europe. Floyd Bennett along with noted explorer and aviator Bernt Balchen flew to provide relief for the crew when Bennett succumbed to a fever while in flight and died. Bernt Balchen [1899 1973] was a pioneer polar aviator, navigator, aircraft mechanical engineer and military leader. Balchen received his wings in 1921 and was commissioned as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Norwegian Air Service. In 1926, through 1930, he served as the chief pilot of the Byrd Antarctic Expeditions, piloting the first flight from the Bay of Whales to the South Pole. Listed for auction are the autographs of Floyd Bennett and Bernt Balchen signed on a album page. The autographs are signed ''Floyd Bennett'' ''Bernt Balchen'' in blue fountain pen and the album page measures 4.50 x 2.50 inches and is in fine condition. The autographs are authentic, the Floyd Bennett  autograph is very rare to obtain and the album page is a wonderful example of these noted pioneering explorers and aviators. We have listed the autographs of other noted early explorers and aviators, along with a nice collection of military, aviation and political autographs.
