Here we have an
Antique G. A. TOPP'S Framing & Roofing Square Tool, Pat. Nov 1, 1892.
This tool was set up similar to a T-Bevel w/ rafter calibration chart.  A Sales pitch from Rayl's catalog stated, "Saves from 3 to 24 hours in laying out a single roof and enables the ordinary workman to frame the most difficult roof with absolute certainty". This RARE a
ntique G. A. Topp & Co, Indianapolis, IN framing square is in very good condition for its age.
The wooden body/handle has only a couple of tiny nicks and the brass fittings are in Excellent condition with a very good patina. The steel blade has some minor staining and patina but it otherwise in good condition with relatively clear and readable markings (see pics !!).  The markings on the front are the principal scale showing pitch and span.  The back markings are the hip and valley scale.
The thumbscrew turns cleanly and locks in the bevel angle.
Overall, the square is approximately 6 1/2" tall and 12" wide.  The inside of the steel is approximately 8 1/4" wide and 4 1/2" tall.  No cracks, breaks or repairs.  No owner marks.
